Free DMV Written Test Simulator for Maine | Updated for 2025

In Maine, if you’re a new driver, you must obtain a learner’s permit before you may apply for a driver’s license – even if you’re over 18. Your permit will allow you to practice supervised driving as you prepare to pass the official road test for a license. To obtain a learner’s permit, you must meet several requirements. One of the most critical is to pass the Maine DMV written knowledge test on road signs, driving laws and regulations, and safe driving techniques. If you’re under 18, you must complete a driver’s education course before taking the written test. If you’re at least 18 years old, a driver’s education course is not required.

The written knowledge test has 30 multiple-choice questions based on the official driver’s manual (Maine DMV Handbook (ME Driver's Manual) 2025). The passing score is 80%.

Unfortunately, passing the written knowledge test by reading the manual may be harder than you think. In 2020 – 2023, 32.6% – nearly one-third – of applicants failed the DMV written test on their first attempt.

We have created a suite of additional study tools to help aspiring drivers like you pass the official written test on their first try. This is our second Maine Permit Practice Test. Like our first permit practice test, it’s based on the official Maine driver’s manual and up to date as of March 2025. All 40 practice questions are multiple choice. You must choose the best or most complete answer for each question.

Feel free to ask our AI Assistant for help with any practice question. You can ask it to elaborate further or give you a hint. If you still miss the question, the AI Assistant will provide you with the correct answer and an explanation.

You can retake this practice test as often as you wish until you’ve mastered the material. Each time, the order of the questions will be randomized.

In addition to our practice tests, we also have two downloadable quick references (“cheat sheets”): “The Top 100 Most Common US DMV Questions” and “The 121 Most Common US Road Signs Questions.” You will likely encounter some of these questions on your knowledge test. The correct answer is provided for each question listed. Try to memorize as many of these questions and answers as you can.

Finally, we also offer our own Maine Permit Test Study Guide to help you get ready for the day of your Maine written test. It covers how to be relaxed yet alert during the test, what documents to have with you, what fees to pay, and other last-minute test tips.
